This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge centered around block print-inspired designs. Interestingly, this theme aligns with the recent surge of block printing content in my social media feeds. However, I must admit I have reservations about challenges that encourage designers to fake the nuances of handmade textures artificially.
In my view, a design can be effective without needing to mimic the quirks of engraving marks or the imperfections of "inking" often associated with block printing. My preference leaned towards designs that could plausibly be created with printable blocks but without overemphasizing these traditional textural elements.
Among the entries, "Jungle Rhythms. Monkey in Tribal Style" by renatta_zare particularly caught my attention. This design features a monkey with a wonderfully expressive demeanor. Initially, I perceived the monkey as angry, then sad, but now I can't shake off the feeling that he's judging ME. This playful interpretation of the theme, combined with a strong character portrayal, made this design my favorite for the week.
